How does esketamine work?
Unlike other antidepressants that work by increasing neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, esketamine stimulates glutamate – the most abundant excitatory messenger in the brain. As the levels of glutamate increase, communication between brain cells is invigorated and the prefrontal cortex becomes more active. These new connections in the brain work to reverse the damage caused by chronic stress and give you much needed relief from your depression.
The results of esketamine are almost instant, with our clients reporting a significant decrease in depressive symptoms within hours of taking it. This is a marked difference when compared with other antidepressants which often take several weeks for users to notice a difference.

What can I expect from esketamine treatment?

It is possible that you will experience some minor side effects for about two hours after taking esketamine. Some people report:

- Changes in perception of touch and taste
- Nausea
- Headaches
While these are some of the most commonly reported side effects, you may only experience one or two, or nothing at all. Generally speaking, first-time esketamine users will likely have some side effects, but these tend to subside down the line as you continue on your esketamine course.
After being monitored for two hours at our clinic, you will be free to go about your usual business. We do, however, advise our clients not to drive or use heavy machinery until the day after treatment. After your esketamine session, you can expect to leave feeling fully revitalised and refreshed.
There is a positive mental health and wellbeing programme that runs alongside the treatment which we recommend doing as part of a package. How often do I need esketamine?
The frequency and dose of the esketamine treatment will depend on your individual circumstances and will be determined by your consultant. This treatment is not suitable for everyone but begins with a twice weekly esketamine treatment. Then under the recommendation of the Consultant will gradually taper to maintenance doses once a week and then once every two weeks.
We will monitor your response to esketamine and work alongside your consultant to assess any changes in your symptoms. Depending on your results the esketamine treatment should be completed in six months or less.
